Have you ever said, “I didn’t get the shot because the light was bad”? I’m almost certain I’ve said that a time or two. However, there is no such thing as bad light—only misunderstood light. Instead of labeling light as bad light, perhaps we should refer to it as the wrong light for the shot we intended to capture. Alternatively, we could look for a shot that is possible with the available light.
During my latest bird photography adventure, I spotted an osprey flying nearby. However, the sky was heavily overcast, which meant I wouldn’t be able to capture a well-lit image of the osprey. Instead, I decided to use the cloudy sky to create a dramatic silhouette of the osprey against the backdrop of the clouds.
Discovering the power of light and how to use it is the key to unlocking the potential of every image you capture.
