Light is always one of the most essential factors in any form of photography, and birdtography is no exception to this rule. A good time to find incredible light for bird photography is in the morning and evening. This image of a red-bellied woodpecker in my backyard was taken late in the afternoon while the warm light of the evening was still shining on tree #9 (yes, I have all my trees numbered); the background in the image was not obtaining much light, creating a nice contrasting scene. Notice how much detail you can see in the red-bellied woodpecker’s feathers, a direct result of that nice light.
This brings to mind another one of my principles for birdtography: “always follow the light.”
